Ibogaine — naturally occurring indole alkaloid from the West African shrub Tabernanthe iboga, long used outside the US to interrupt opioid use disorder in a single multi-day dose. Stanford's 30-veteran study (Cherian et al., Nature Medicine 2024) paired ibogaine with magnesium to mitigate QT prolongation and reported one-month reductions of 88% in PTSD, 87% in depression, and 81% in anxiety symptoms in special-operations veterans with traumatic brain injury. On 18 April 2026, with Joe Rogan standing behind him in the Oval Office, President Trump signed "Accelerating Medical Treatments for Serious Mental Illness" — directing HHS to channel at least $50M to states developing psychedelic programs and instructing the FDA + DEA to open a Right to Try pathway for ibogaine. Rogan said he had texted the president about the molecule and got back "Sounds great! Do you want FDA approval? Let's do it!" — the policy turn the field had been waiting on for two decades.
